The Lancaster Airport Authority (LAA) is providing an update regarding the ongoing archaeological investigation of a historic gravesite located on airport property on the north side of Lancaster Airport.
As part of planned development activities, the Airport Authority engaged qualified cultural resource professionals to evaluate an area historically associated with the Meister family farmstead dating to the late 1700s. During that professionally supervised work, multiple historic headstones were identified. Prior to this investigation, the precise location and extent of the burial area was not fully known.
Once the presence of historic burial features became evident, the Airport Authority immediately shifted its focus to careful evaluation, consultation, and protection of the site. All work has since proceeded in coordination with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and in accordance with applicable Pennsylvania laws governing historic burial places.
From the outset of this process, the Lancaster Airport Authority has engaged directly with identified descendants of the Meister family to understand their perspectives and obtain their input in the event an affirmative identification of a burial site was discovered. The Airport’s primary focus throughout this process has emphasized respect, dignity, and long-term care for the individuals associated with the site. Based on those discussions, the descendants have expressed their desire that any headstones and remains identified at the site be relocated to a recognized cemetery in a location that allows unrestricted access for family members and others to visit and pay their respects. Those descendants, along with the Airport, believe that course of action represents the most appropriate and respectful long-term solution.
All investigative activities are being conducted pursuant to an approved Burial Recovery Plan, which establishes strict procedures for archaeological monitoring, documentation, and the respectful handling of human remains. Human remains have since been encountered during the investigation. Upon that discovery, all work at the site was immediately halted. No further activity will occur until final approvals are received from the appropriate local and state authorities in accordance with the Burial Recovery Plan, and any necessary permission from the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas is received.
The Lancaster Airport Authority recognizes the historical, cultural, and personal significance of this discovery. The Authority remains committed to acting as a responsible steward of the site, honoring the wishes of families, and ensuring that all actions are taken with care, transparency, and respect. Additional updates will be provided as appropriate as the process continues.
